Summer Holidays are coming, but what are you going to do with yours?

By: Christine Ridgeon, Outreach Officer, Next Steps South West

Depending on your year of study, you could have anything from six weeks up to ten weeks off. That means no classes, no teachers and no home work. But what are you going to fill your time with? Once you finish your education and enter the world of work, you’ll never get this length of summer holiday again, so we’ve put together some ideas so that you can holiday in style.

School summer holidays provide a great opportunity to spend some time with your family and friends. If you’re lucky enough to be going on holiday, either in this country or abroad, research where it is you’re going before you go. Find out what is nearby so that you can explore whilst you’re away and really experience what the place is like.

If you’re having a staycation (a stay-at-home vacation) then you should research what’s in your area. When you have so many things on your doorstep, you tend not to notice what is there. Chances are that tourists visit your local area for a reason. Find out what it is and have a day being a tourist in your local area. It’s also important to set aside some time where you can just relax. If you were on holiday then you might have a day at the beach or lounging by a pool – make sure to fit some of that into your time off!

Why not get your family or your friends together and have a day out somewhere. Can you arrange a theme park trip or if you’re a bit short of cash, a day at the beach? Get active and find some new walks or go for a bike ride. Get inspired by Wimbledon and try your hand at tennis.

If you’re finishing year 11, 12 or 13, depending on when your last exam is, you could have up to ten weeks off. That is a lot of time to fill. If you are organised then you might have already signed up to take part in the Nation Citizen Service (NCS). If you’re a current year 10 going into year 11, then take note as you can sign up for NCS from this Autumn for their Summer programme 2020. NCS is an amazing opportunity to meet new people, go on a residential for a week, and take part in a social action project. If you’re a University student then it’s is a great place to find seasonal work throughout the summer. To find out more about NCS check out their website.

It’s also worth checking out your local college or sixth form, if that’s where you’re going, as many places will run events in the summer. These provide a great opportunity to have a look round when there are fewer people about, and you’ll get to meet other students.

Whether you’re finishing year 11 or you’re in college or sixth form, it’s a fantastic time to start thinking about university. Many universities across the country will be running residential trips so that you can look around campuses, stay in real halls of residences, and explore the city. To find out more about these opportunities, check out this link.

Summer is a great time to get out and find a job and get some work experience. You could work for part of the summer and get some money behind you for the new term ahead. There are usually quite a few jobs that come up as seasonal and only run for the course of the summer. This is a brilliant way of getting some experience that will ultimately help you in the long run. The skills that you get whilst working will look fantastic on your CV or in a personal statement. Admissions tutors love to see this! If you do choose to work, try and get some time off to relax as well. You want to be able to go back into a new term refreshed.

When you’ve finished your final year of college or sixth form, depending on when you’re due to start at university, you could potentially end up with nearly three months off. (Make sure you check your start dates.) Camp America is one of the many options where you could spend your summer travelling and working. America is full of summer camps for young people and always on the look-out for people to become counsellors. This means looking after the children and taking part in activities with them. You have to be over eighteen to be eligible to work with Camp America, and if you want to know more you can check out their website.

Whatever you choose to do, and whatever the weather, have an amazing summer!
