UCAS: What to do after receiving an offer

By: Haydon Anstis

This article from UCAS is everything you’ll need to know when replying to your university offers. Knowing this information will give you that extra bit of confidence when you start to make these important decisions. From deadlines to student finance, we’ve got you covered…

Replying to offers

Once you have received decisions from all of your choices, it’s time to reply to any offers you’ve received. Before you do, here are the top five things to consider:

  1. Do you understand the conditions of their offer? If you’re not sure, you should check with the uni or college.
  2. If you haven’t already, visit the uni or college – it’s important you choose somewhere you’ll be happy. Find an open day!
  3. Discuss any individual needs with the university or college – for example, if you have a disability. That way, everything you need will be in place for when they start. Find out more.
  4. Take time to consider and compare offers – it’s important you make the right decision for you, and have weighed up your options carefully.

When do you need to reply?

The deadline to reply depends on when you received your last decision. Applicants can check their reply by date in Track, but here’s an overview of the main undergraduate reply deadlines.

Last decision received on or before                                              Reply date

31 March 2019                                                                                                   1 May 2019
2 May 2019                                                                                                         6 June 2019
6 June 2019                                                                                                       20 June 2019
11 July 2019                                                                                                        18 July 2019

If you don’t reply by your deadline, any offers you have will be automatically declined – this is called decline by default.

What replies can you make?

  • Firm acceptance (your first choice) – if it’s an unconditional offer, the place is yours! If it’s conditional, the place is yours if you meet the offer conditions.
  • Insurance acceptance (your back-up choice) – this is a second chance for applicants to secure a place if they don’t meet the conditions of their first choice. We recommend your insurance choice has lower offer conditions than your firm acceptance.
  • Decline – you can only accept one firm choice and one insurance choice, so must decline any other offers.

Replying to UCAS Conservatoire offers

If you have applied to study at a conservatoire, how and when to reply will be different. Find out more here.

What if you change your mind?

When you’ve replied to your offers, you have 14 days to change your replies. But you can only do this once – that’s why it’s so important you take the time to consider all your options, and make informed choices.

What if you don’t get any offers?

  • If you’ve used all five of your choices, and are not holding any offers, you can add another choice using Extra. It’s available now, until 4th July.
  • You can also sign up for free direct contact service, allowing unis and colleges to contact you directly about places on courses you think might be suitable.
  • If you’re having second thoughts about uni or college, remember there are alternative options. You can explore all your options and sign up for more information on ucas.com.

Don’t forget to apply for student finance

Applying for student finance can be tricky to get your head around, so don’t leave it until the last minute! Applicants can apply for student finance now – how and where to apply depends on where they currently live.
