Freshers’ Week

Freshers' Week

By: Bill Thrall

And we’re almost off…

A-level results day is a thing of the past; those years of schooling have come and gone, along with all those worries…Will I get the results I need?; Will I get into my first-choice university, or will I have to go through clearing? What even is clearing?

Lectures start properly in a couple of weeks, and that’s when the serious stuff begins, but before then there’s freshers’ week!

So, what is freshers’ week?

For many new students, freshers’ week equals party time, but there’s really more to it than that. It’s a week when university campuses are set up to show what’s on offer to new students – there will be a lot of things going on.

You’ll be able to find out what clubs and societies you could join, and believe me, there are quite a few of them. From book club to snowboard club, and drama society to the hot-air balloon society, there are things to suit most people, if that’s what you’re after.

There will be all sorts of freebies on offer, so it’s a good time to stock up on stationery, stress balls, and all things free!

You’ll also get to go to introductory lectures – and we recommend going to these. As well as finding out where your lectures are going to be held, you’ll get a chance to see some of the faces that are going to become quite familiar. It’s also a chance to see you lecturers in action for the first time, and you’ll pick up bits of information that will serve you well during the year ahead.

Beginning university or college can be intimidating for most of us. Freshers’ week provides you with a chance to become familiar with your new surroundings, including your accommodation. You’ll most certainly meet like-minded people.
