Five Easy Exams Tips

By: Betony

I have a few weeks until exam week, thankfully it’s not too bad, I only have 3 exams and the one I was really dreading has been postponed due to the lockdown. Although, I think out of all the exams I have taken (GCSE, A-Level, Access to HE) these are the easiest because you know what to expect and lecturers really want you to pass! So, in the spirit of procrastination (seriously, it’s one my of better talents), I thought I would create my top tips for managing revision because it is something I really struggle with and always have!

1. WORK OUT WHAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU

Everyone studies, learns and revises differently. Work out what works for you: short periods of time or long stints? Flashcards, answering questions, watching videos or practice exam questions? Or maybe you work best if you are with other people if so organise a virtual group, and if you prefer to be on your own (definitely me, I’m so easily distracted…), don’t feel guilty for turning down group study sessions. Also, if your lecturer organises a drop-in session, always join for the first few minutes because other students will have questions even if you don’t or haven’t thought about. It’s an easy way to find out more about your exam as well, and if you’re lucky your lecturer may drop a few hints. I also, think as we are all working virtually it’s really nice to see and talk to people you’re not living with!

2. DIFFERENT TOPICS MAY NEED DIFFERENT REVISION STRATEGIES

I find that I can’t revise all modules the same way. So think about the best ways to revise each topic. I use flashcards for some topics and not for others. I use good notes for all my lecture notes, as you can search your handwriting and it also has a flashcard template I use as well.

3. FIND OUT WHAT YOUR STRENGTHS ARE… AND YOUR WEAKNESSES

Spend more time revising your weaker areas, but don’t forget to spend time revising what you are already good at!

4. EAT WELL

It’s always really easy to start snacking and eating rubbish when you are revising. Make sure you eat proper meals, and throw in a few healthy snacks – think grapes or nuts.

5. TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF

Make sure no matter how much you have to do. Make time to do your own thing. Even if all you want to do is watch TV or get sucked in TikTok.
