NHS careers in the psychological professions workshop for schools

Help students learn about starting a career in mental health and hear first-hand from NHS colleagues who work in the professions.

Helping people with mental health conditions is a hugely rewarding job, and each day brings unique and varied challenges, making psychology a very attractive career option for those with interest in the subject and ambitions to help people.

This workshop run by Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Health and Care Partnership (NHS) via Speakers for Schools, will help students to understand the breadth of roles and career pathways available. The workshop will:

  • Explore some of the 19+ areas of psychological careers and hear first-hand from NHS colleagues who work in the professions.
  • Identify the general skills and qualifications to work in the field.
  • Flag the key differences between roles and pathways in terms of e.g.
    • Psychology vs Psychiatry vs Psychotherapy
    • How roles relate and work with broader areas of health and care (such as in Nursing and Allied Health)
    • Entry level through to highly specialised rolesAnswer student questions at the end!

The session runs for 90mins (13.10- 14.40) and will have a short break in the middle when students will be asked to reflect in groups and come up with questions to pose at the end of the session (14.30).

*Teachers are asked to support the facilitation of this by sharing resources (a signposting document will be made available in the virtual classroom prior to event) and noting Questions (so they can be typed into the chat box/ensuring students can come up to the microphone to ask their question when invited).
