Finding a Job at University

By: Isabel Arrowsmith

Where do I begin the search?

Securing a part-time job at university is a highly recommended way to fund your studies. Once you have arrived at university, it is never too soon to start searching for a job! Many universities will have a careers website on which you can find current vacancies nearby for jobs relevant and attractive to students, such as waitressing and retail jobs. Many cities have a main shopping centre such as Drake’s Circus in Plymouth or Princesshay in Exeter which are full of shops looking for staff.

Shall I look online or visit stores in person?

Both! It is really easy to search for jobs by using websites such as Indeed which list current vacancies and you can filter the results to suit you. For example, you can easily find jobs to match your interests, experience, availability and desired rates of pay. While many vacancies today are advertised online, you can also enquire instore about vacancies. To apply for jobs in any capacity, one of the first things you will need is an up-to-date CV.

How do I write an effective CV?

You may be new to CV writing, but with the support of university services such as the careers team, it isn’t as scary as it seems! In addition, universities organise skills workshops such as learning how to write a CV and cover letter to equip you with the skills you need to successfully land a part-time job as a student. I attended one of these workshops in my first few weeks of university and it was super helpful. Since then, I have been able to add to my CV as I gain new experience and qualifications.

Top tips!

Universities often host part-time jobs fairs where local employers have stands providing information about job opportunities available and the application process which ensues. My top tip is to look for 0-hour contract jobs which can fit work around your studies and personal commitments; work never has to come first! I became a student ambassador at university which I love because I get to engage with a range of exciting opportunities both on and off campus. Good luck with finding a job at university!
