Destinations Fair inspires future choices for students across Cornwall

News June 2026

Held on 10 June 2026, the event welcomed students from schools and colleges across the county, providing a valuable opportunity to explore higher education, training and career pathways in one place.

Building on the success of previous Higher Education Progression Fairs at the college, the Destinations Fair brought together universities, colleges, employers and industry representatives from across the South West and beyond to help students make informed decisions about their next steps after sixth form or college.

This year’s event featured 70 exhibitors, including universities from across the UK, specialist higher education providers, local employers and public sector organisations. Students had the opportunity to speak directly with admissions teams, lecturers, careers advisers and industry professionals about courses, student life, accommodation, finance, apprenticeships and future career opportunities.

Throughout the day, students also attended a range of themed talks and information sessions designed to provide practical guidance on the higher education journey and life beyond school or college.

More than 1400 students attended the event from 12 schools and colleges across Cornwall, making it one of the largest progression events of its kind in the region.

‘We have been delighted to be able to host this fantastic event again at the University Centre Truro and Penwith College. We know that fewer and fewer young people are able to attend university open days and so miss out on the important conversations which can help them to shape their next steps. This is especially true for young people in Cornwall, for whom the distances to travel, cost of travel and transport links can often be prohibitive. Bringing all of these institutions together under one roof gives our young people the chance to see what opportunities are available to them, whether that be moving away for university or taking up places with one of the excellent higher education providers available to them locally’.  Kirsty Sincock, University Centre Truro & Penwith

‘The aim for this fair was to create an inspiring environment where students could have meaningful conversations, ask questions and gain confidence in making informed decisions’.  Niki Williams, NSSW Outreach Officer

The event welcomed representatives from a diverse range of organisations, including higher education institutions, specialist colleges, the NHS, Armed Forces and other employers, ensuring students could explore a broad spectrum of opportunities tailored to their interests and aspirations.

Feedback from exhibitors highlighted the enthusiasm and engagement of students throughout the day.

‘It was a pleasure to meet the students and speak with them about their next steps’. Bath Spa University

The Destinations Fair forms part of Next Steps South West’s ongoing commitment to supporting young people across the South West to make informed decisions about their education, training and career pathways.

Following the success of this year’s event, NSSW and Truro & Penwith College look forward to continuing to provide opportunities that connect students with the people, organisations and information they need to take their next steps with confidence.
